Rango

by Dante Rosario on March 4th, 2011

The Players: (Voices of) Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, Ned Beatty, Alfred Molina, Bill Nighy, and Timothy Oliphant.

The Game Plan: An ordinary chameleon (Johnny Depp ) with dreams of becoming an actor, falls out of a car and finds himself in a strange desert land.  As he desperately searches for water, the chameleon meets and befriends another lizard named Beans (Isla Fisher), who he follows to a nearby town populated by rodents and reptiles called Dirt.  In the town of Dirt the chameleon uses his taste for the theatrics to make a name for himself by adopting the alias of Rango and becoming the new town sheriff.  The chameleon’s new identity strikes fear in the hearts and minds of the local towns folks who have heard stories of him.  There’s just one problem, for as fearsome as Rango’s name is he still has to battle the bandits that are stealing Dirt’s already depleted water supply, and find a way to live up to the legend he has created.

Dante’s Thoughts: Rango is an old school western with amazing animation and a cast staring a chameleon, lizards, moles, rats and other rodents, that are completely lifelike.  For as funny and entertaining as this film was to watch for me as an adult, there are many instances where the target audience is unclear, since many of the jokes seem too mature for younger audiences.  I did enjoy the wild-west theme and the human like characteristics of the animal cast though and found Rango well worth the price of admission.

Touchdowns: The animation, fun storyline, and the western feel coupled with the A-List voice cast of Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Abigail Breslin, and Bill Nighy make Rango a truly entertaining film.

Penalties: The only flag is against the adult humor that might leave younger audiences feeling clueless after some of the more comedic moments in the film.

End of Game Summary: Rango is one of those stand out films with stellar animation, a good plot, and enjoyable humor, that will probably make it one of the best films of the year.
