Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole
by Gary Barnidge on October 5th, 2010
A movie that is based around Owls is something that many people wouldn’t know how to perceive. This movie however brings a very new and fresh idea into a captivating story.
The movie is a story about a young owl named Soren (voiced by Jim Sturgess) who is tantalized by stories of “The Guardians” told by his father. He and his brother Kludd (Voiced by Ryan Kwanten) are Kidnapped by bigger owls called Pure Ones who want to rule every kingdom. It’s up to Soren to find the Guardians and stop the Pure Ones with a unlikely group friends. ts also a story of over coming the odds no matter who you are.
When you watch this movie you will be mesmerized by the 3D in the film which will take your breath away with the way the feathers flutter in the wind. The film also uses slow-motion animation to help show the true 3D with rain drops coming off the screen as well as feathers falling into your lap from the fight scenes.
Director Zack Snyder uses his trademark slow-motion scenes to show the style and flare for breathtaking effects, and true grace of action scenes with perfect timing to help build the emotion of the scenes. The Story in the film has a very Lord of the Rings-esque feeling to it that helps make you want more. I
The Voice acting is spot on and fits perfectly with the characters which in turn helps the story and feel of the movie blend perfectly together into one nicely woven movie that keeps you interested. The film does have something that older kids can relate to such as clicks, because the owls have their own clicks which older kids who see the movie would be able to relate to.
The film is not your typical animated movie it has a much more serious tone with lots of issues that are tackled throughout the movie such as Unity, Loyalty, Sacrifice, Betrayal, and Courage which comes from both sides of the fight. It is a very intense movie from start to finish with the in your face action and story that helps build a captivating movie.
The only qualm I have with this movie is it feels a little rushed at times. The movie jumps from nothing happening to everything happening all out of nowhere which takes you back for a second trying to understand what all is happening.
Also the film is rated PG which may be alright but it does have some very scary fight scenes that may scare younger children, and has a little darker tone that some younger kids might not understand or could scare them. It also has a scene that involves pellets which may gross out some kids.
All in all the film is a movie that I didn’t expect much out of but I was pleasantly surprised by it and here is to hoping to see some more owl movies soon.
