My Soul To Take Review

by admin on October 23rd, 2010

Starting Line-up (cast): Mark Thieriot, John Margo, Denzel Whitaker, Zena Grey, Nick Lashaway, Paulina Olszynski, Jeremy Chu, Emily Meade, Raul Esparza, Jessica Hecht, Frank Grillo, Danai Gurira, Harris Yulin, Shareeka Epps, and Elena Hurst.

Dante’s Thoughts: The best part of “My Soul To Take” was the snacks I purchased at the theater concession stand before the movie. Wes Craven is a horror legend; this is the man that brought us the original “A Nightmare On Elm Street” movie series, “The Hills Have Eyes,” “The People Under The Stairs,” and “The Last House On the Left.” Unfortunately, I don’t see this movie going down as one of the Wes Craven’s greatest. From my perspective, it looked like Wes had a ton of ideas floating around in his head, but when it came time to put them all on paper and draft a script, it all came out as one scrambled mess. I never really knew what was going on, and the bad cast didn’t help. To top it off, there are scenes where a character is introduced and then you never see them again in the movie. Did they die, or are they still alive? We never find out…

The Game Plan (plot): Seven teens in the small town of Riverton, MA share a common bond, they have the same birthday, and they were all born on the night the serial killer known as the Riverton Ripper died. As it turns out on the night of his death the Ripper made a vow to return and murder all the children born on the night he died. Sixteen years later a string of mysterious murders all associated with the date of the Ripper’s death begin to occur, and the superstitious people of Riverton start to wonder if the Ripper has actually returned, or if a member of the community is trying to keep his legacy alive.

The Touchdowns (positive): I’m not going to sugar coat it, there was nothing positive about this film. The only thing I did like was the design of the Riverton Ripper costume, that was one scary looking dude… I know if saw him coming at me with that crazy hair and oversized trench coat, I probably wouldn’t stick around to find out if he was just looking for the bus station.

Penalties (negatives):

- The spotty plot…and that might be an understatement given the fact that the overall story was all over the map. Honestly, the film might as well have been in Latin with subtitles, because it made little to no sense at all.

- The lack of explanation around the mystery characters that just appear in the story, and then disappear without making any impact at all. Take the principles daughter, she is impregnated by the school jock, but the audience is never told if her pregnancy is related to the Ripper legend continuing in the future, or if it was just some random plot event.

- The D- grade acting, and writing…whichever one you want to blame it on. – The use of 3-D…and I mean that as a joke, because there was no 3D in this movie… so why make people pay for something that isn’t there.

The Fumble (where the movie lost it): What more can I say…I didn’t think “My Soul To Take” was going to be a comedy, but with all the bad acting, and the nonsensical plot, I found it really hard not to laugh. If Wes Craven was trying to make a horror/thriller movie, then I don’t understand how he thought this was the script to make it with.

Game Summary: I’m a horror movie fan, even when it comes to bad or cheesy horror, I’m there. However, “My Soul to Take,” was just plain old bad, this movie has absolutely no redeeming qualities. And don’t waste your money seeing it in 3-D, because you will be disappointed… Enough said!
