The Tourist
by Gary Barnidge on December 9th, 2010
The Starting Lineup – Frank Tupelo (Johnny Depp) Elise Clifton-Ward (Angelina Jolie) Inspector John Acheson (Paul Bettany) The Englishman (Rufus Sewell) Reginald Shaw (Steven Berkoff) Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (Director)
Gary’s Thoughts – With the star power that Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie bring the film is reason enough to see the film unless you just aren’t a fan of either one of them. The films plot isn’t as bad as people have made it out to be, it’s actually an entertaining movie that will keep you intrigued throughout the film. The movie starts a little slow but it may not feel slow because its necessary for the characters development. The onscreen chemistry between the two is amazing. The dialogue in the film isn’t the best but Depp and Jolie make it work throughout the film. Depp’s comedic timing is very subtle but will deliver. If you go into the movie expecting a blockbuster film you may be upset but if you just want to see an entertaining movie with two great actors/actresses then is movie is something you will enjoy.
The Game Plan – When a Beautiful women (Jolie) sits next to an American tourist (Depp) visiting Italy to heal a broken heart he is taken back by her beauty and grace that it gets him in trouble and makes him a man on the run from a few different people.
Touchdowns – Depp and Jolie both deliver in their roles with their onscreen chemistry with each other. The stunning scenery of Venice is breath-taking. Bettany delivers in a supporting role that fits him well with some seriousness and comedy. Subtle comedy sprinkled throughout will get the audience laughing. The way Jolie is portrayed as Stunning Star and the center of attention anywhere she goes just helps to build the differences between her and the bumbling American tourist. The music throughout the film fits perfect in the scenes they are used with the exception of one song when Jolie drops Depp off to catch a boat and plane back home.
Penalties - The writing of the film surely lacks which may be contributed to the 3 different directors the movie went through. The movie may start a little slow to some people’s liking and may not be enough action throughout (doesn’t take away from overall feel of the movie). The way the police keep surveillance on Jolie is just to obvious and can be annoying at times.
The Game Winner – The Chemistry between Jolie and Depp is amazing. The emotion shown by both Depp and Jolie is portrayed beautifully and can even been seen in their eyes. The subtle comedy mixed in is a nice touch.
Game Summary – Don’t go into this movie expecting a full out action packed movie because that it isn’t. It is an entertaining movie that will keep you wondering what will happen next with a nice little twist involving Jolie.
