The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
by Dante Rosario on September 3rd, 2010
Imagine being a powerful sorcerer in modern day Manhattan and saving the city from being taken over by another powerful sorcerer. Now you have the basic plot for this film. Nicholas Cage plays the role of Balthazar Blake who is defending the city from Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). Balthazar soon finds that he will not be able to stop Maxim on his own so he turns Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel) for help. Dave does not appear to be a great sorcerer from his bumbling and awkwardness, but with Balthazar’s help discovers the hidden powers that he has within to be a great sorcerer. Of course there is a girl involved who Dave looks to impress while keeping his powers and Balthazar a secret.
Walt Disney Pictures wrote “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” so it is targeted more towards a young audience. The director Jon Turtletaub has worked with Nicholas Cage in a few past films, including “National Treasure” and “National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets.” This movie though wasn’t the same quality. It was a little too cheesy at times and the story doesn’t keep the attention of the audience. Jay Baruchel plays the same character that he always plays – awkward, bad with girls, gets pushed around by everyone until the end of the movie.
I wasn’t expecting an amazing storyline from this film, but the trailer made it seem as though Disney was coming out with a solid film. Once the movie was over I was just indifferent about it. Not great, not terrible.
