The Starting Lineup – Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg) Clive Gollings (Nick Frost) Jane Lynch (Pat Stevens) Paul (Seth Rogen voice) Agent Zoil (Jason Bateman) The Big Guy (Sigourney Weaver) Haggard (Bill Hader) O’Reily (Joe Lo Truglio) Ruth Buggs (Kristen Wiig) Greg Mottola (Director)
Gary’s Thoughts – In Pegg and Frost’s first film Shaun of the Dead they put a comedy take on Zombies and their second film Hot Fuzz was a comedy take on the Cop action movies. Their Third film they are taking it to new heights with putting their comedy twists on the Sci-Fi movies with some voice help from Seth Rogen. The film is filled with great send offs to many of the classic Sci-Fi movies which just stays true to the way Pegg and Frost deliver their comedies. Paul is filled with lots of rude and crazy comedy with at times even looking down on religion which some people will take as a negative but its very tasteful. There are some scenes that could have been shortened or even taken out because some scenes feel drawn out. The Chemistry between Frost and Pegg is just so natural that it makes the movie feel very genuine with the exception of the Alien.
The Game Plan – When Paul (Voiced by Seth Rogen) lands on earth and escapes from Area 51 he runs into Graeme and Clive, best friends from England who are huge Sci-Fi fans coming from Comic-Con. They offer to help Paul get to where he needs to go and to get home but there are others who want Paul back in the governments hands chasing them.
Touchdowns – All of the send offs to all the Sci-Fi movies is great with one liners from certain movies and certain scenes from each movie as well. There is a part in the movie where Paul is explaining some contributions he has made for the government which is hilarious and just fits perfect in the movie. Pegg and Frost have such great chemistry that they don’t ever look like they are acting it just looks natural. The Scene stealers of the movie though are Bill Hader as Haggard and Joe Lo Truglio as O’Reilly with their comedy and demeanor during their scenes. The cameo from Sigourney Weaver was perfect and is a nice cameo to tie in the movie Alien. Bateman as the tough no nonsense Agent Zoil is perfectly casted.
Penalties – The only penalties I saw was the Delay of Game from some of the scenes that were drawn out and just weren’t needed. Also the constant scenes of the RV driving by got old quick.
The Game Winner – Seth Rogen as the voice of Paul is perfectly casted because his voice just fits perfect with the demeanor of the Alien. Also the cast that the movie has is amazing with great performances from Pegg, Frost, Weaver, Hader, Bateman, and Wigg.
Game Summary – If you enjoyed the first two films from Frost and Pegg (Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead) then you will truly enjoy this film and will recognize all the great connections between the Sci-Fi movies that they impersonate. If you haven’t seen the other two films then you may want to check them out after this film because you may enjoy them as well. The film is filled with crude but tasteful humor. There are some religious jokes that some may feel is a little too much or demeaning toward religion but it fits with the movie and is just comedy. If you are looking for a laugh then this movie will deliver your need for laughter.
